The most common cockroaches that are found in houses and restaurants are German cockroaches. Adult cockroaches have a flattened, oval shape, spiny legs, and long, antennae. Immature stages are similar, but smaller and wingless.
Eggs are light tan and can yield as much as 36 baby cockroaches. Cockroaches feed on all types of food and can enter homes on cartons of food and used furniture and appliances. Infestations are heavy in food stores, nursing homes and second-hand shops.
Once they enter homes, German Cockroaches generally develop in kitchen areas and
bathrooms. During the day, these roaches they hide clustered behind pictures and clocks, in cracks around cabinets, closets or pantries, and in and under stoves, refrigerators and dishwashers.
German Cockroaches do not like movement and usually avoid light, so if you are seeing them in the daytime while you are moving about the room, you probably have a larger population than you realize. These pests also prefer to hide within five feet or less of their food and water source.
Sanitation and good housekeeping is essential in the treatment and prevention of cockroaches. Food and liquids should not be left spilled or lying around and rubbish should be taken outdoors immediately. |
