The house fly usually is found around humans and domestic animals. House flies are generally found in largest numbers during the hotter summer months.
In good conditions house flies can reproduce quickly because of their rapid developmental time and the large number of eggs produced by each emale-several batches of about 100 to 150 eggs.
Flies usually lay their eggs in warfm, organic materials such as grass clippings, mouldy vegetables and fruits or other rubbish. In the best
conditions, house flies can develop from egg to adult in less than 7 days.
Although the house fliy does not bite, it is a carrier of many diseases that it transmits from the bacteria that it picks up from feeding on human and animal waste.
Flies can be managed and prevented by sealing cracks or placing screens on windows.
Removing rubbish promptly and ensuring that all rubbish is well sealed and placed far away from doors and windows.
In restaurants and food preparation areas which are at the highest risk for fly infestation, hygiene measures must be followed and in case of infestation, professional pest control must be carried out. |
